Saugeen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary

The Ladies Aid, precursor to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was formed on April 27th, 1948; less than a year after the hospital opened.  The original 39 members took responsibility for linens and organized social evenings to raise funds.  Today, the auxiliary has over 100 members, most still active in attending the monthly meetings, volunteering at the hospital and participating in the social and fundraising events.

Our major fundraising events organized each year include a Geranium sale (on-going since 1977) and bake sale held on the May long weekend (this event sells out within two hours of opening!), tag days the first week of July, a golf tournament in August and a Christmas bazaar in November. We also host the opening day in Mid-May of ''Armen’s Café" in Southampton, owned and operated by Armen Higgins, who donates the day's profits to the Auxiliary. We also have a hospital gift shop that our volunteers run as well as a group of volunteers who do all the sewing and knitting of our hand made items. We also set up and sell Nevada tickets at the hospital and some local retailers. Along with individual craft sales, special raffles and smaller events each year you get an idea of how busy our members are and how generous with their time and effort.

The highlight of our year was our golf tournament held in August at the Saugeen Golf Club. A lot of work for a few but worth the effort.

Planning is well underway for our next year fundraising projects.

In the year 2008, we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Auxiliary by planting a garden in front of the hospital to commemorate the event.
